WAYS TO Get There

There are many ways to get to the castle! We recommend you fly into either Edinburgh or Glasgow, both of which are a quick flight from Heathrow in London. Please know that you will need an electronic visa to travel to the UK.

PLACES TO Stay

There is limited accommodation in the castle for close family and the wedding party, as indicated on your RSVP. For those not staying with us in the castle, we highly recommend booking in the neighboring town of Moffat or Beattock and either driving or pre-booking a taxi to the wedding.

Please note that Scotland books up VERY early - accommodation should be the first priority if you plan to attend.

Scotland Travel

Ways to Get Around

Our preferred method of transit in Scotland is a mix of train and car - so if you're not comfortable driving on the left hand side, we recommend taking a taxi or a hired driver. You do not need transit within the cities, they're easily walkable. Just bring comfortable shoes!

Uber does NOT exist outside of Glasgow and Edinburgh - so do not plan on rideshare, especially if traveling North! If you're planning to visit Skye, know that you should plan for 2-3 days on either a tour or by car, it's quite far!

If you're planning on taking the train, we recommend downloading the ScotRail app. You can pre-book your tickets via the app if you like to plan ahead, even for trips to London.

Misc

  • The sun sets around 10pm in Scotland in the summer, so it will be daytime for most of the wedding.

  • If you're planning on traveling north, the Isle of Skye books out VERY early, we recommend you book ASAP for travel outside of the major cities.

  • While tipping extra is not practiced, plan to see 15% added to your total bill as a service charge at restaurants.

  • Plan on rain (even if it doesn't say it's going to rain). It's Scotland, it'll probably rain.

  • If you're looking to try Scottish traditional food, look for haggis, black pudding, and scotch eggs on menus, and try a full Scottish breakfast (it's different than the English!). We also loved cullen skink - which is similar to clam chowder.

  • Scotland is known for its whisky worldwide, but it's also great for gin, and we found plenty of gin distilleries if whisky isn't your thing.

  • We generally found Scotland safe (we had no issues with pickpockets) but please be aware that this is still Europe, and if you plan to travel to other places, pickpockets are present, and you should be aware of your surroundings and belongings at all times.

  • Be aware of midge season in the north of Scotland, and plan to bring bug spray if doing outdoor activities in the Highlands.
